Burnout

So much joy comes from salvation and a relationship with God. You experience joy, peace, comfort, and assurance. But, something is coming around the back door, lurking in the shadows— burnout.

As I approached my senior year of High School, I went to my father’s office. I had devised a plan to convince him to allow me to quit High School baseball. Baseball was the sport I had played since I was old enough to hold a bat. Let’s make no bones about it: I was not very good. However, I had dedicated much time, energy, and money to playing a sport. So, when I approached my Dad and asked, “Can I quit baseball?” He asked me a straightforward question, “Why?” For me, the answer was easy… burnout. I had felt as if the thing I had dedicated so much time to was not producing the results I thought it should.

We can often feel the same about the Christian life. It is hard to understand that something so good can sometimes put us in uncomfortable and unstable situations. We put all our chips in and do not see the results we feel we should.

What are the results of burnout? I think this question has many different answers, and we talk about them in the latest podcast, but it revolves around one solution— laziness. I began to realize something this week as we sat on this topic of burnout: God hates laziness. Laziness does not honor the Lord. It is pretty sinful. Your life is designed for hard work to capitalize on every opportunity the Lord gives you. We do not want to miss out on giving the Lord the most glory.

How do we prevent burnout? Again, many different answers were given, but one kept rising to the top— Spiritual Disciplines. When your life is centered around the discipline of loving God’s Word, prayer, and worship, it becomes harder to fall into burnout. The reason is that his loving-kindness is better than life itself.

God is good and able. It can be easy to fall into a time of burnout and dryness. However, trust that God can and will sustain you. If you want to hear more on burnout, check out the latest podcast from All the Saints at the link below.
